Managing safe use of technology at home

The iPad is primarily for school use and at home is used for homework and subject related research.

The ipad is also a personal device and can be used to play games and music as well as a social networking tool. Sometimes this can cause angst as these aspects may disrupt students from effective homework time and even family time.

It is recommended that parents exercise a degree of control over the use of this personal device at home. Just as you set limits and expect certain standards of behaviour from your children in other aspects of their social development, the same should apply to their personal use of the iPad.

Here we offer tips and  links to resources we think may be useful to ensure safe use of technology at home. You may have other strategies - we would love to hear them. Use the Contact page to email us with what works for you.

  • Keep computers and televisions out of bedrooms. You want to know what your child is doing when connected to the world.
  • Have you considered installing an internet filter at home to block inappropriate websites? Some popular ones to consider are Net Nanny, Open DNS and K9 Web Protection.
  • Homework can be done in a common area e.g at the dining table. Social interaction is also enhanced in this manner.
  • At the end of the day all digital devices are turned off and kept in a common place outside bedrooms for charging. This includes parents and other siblings.
  • Set time limits on use of ipad for playing games or social networking. This should be seen as a reward for completing other domestic chores or homework.
  • Engage your children in conversation about what they do on their iPad and in their digital world. Become informed.
  • Equal time be given to digital play and outdoor exercise - strike a balance.
  • Set digital free times in your family calendar e.g device free Sundays
  • Consider old fashion board games and jigsaw puzzles for family fun. They are just as engaging, more social and quite retro!
  • Setup parental restrictions on your child's iPad. It may be their device but that doesn't mean they can do as they wish. See the video below on how to set this up.
