FAQ

What happens if my child is caught doing the wrong thing with their iPad - will it be confiscated? Would I have to come and pick it up like a phone?

No. It would be poor practice to remove a key learning device from a student as a punishment.  There would be consequences attached to its misuse as with other breaches of conduct at school. The basic theme is to address the poor behaviour rather than blame the technology.

What will be on the iPad?

There will be Apps, both paid and free, as recommended by the school for student learning. There will also be some textbooks. Any other personal apps or files should be kept to a minimum.

Will my child still be issued with textbooks?

Where digital textbooks are not available or cost is prohibitive a textbook will be issued. We are keen to reduce the weight of textbooks in students’ backpacks.

Why doesn’t the school use its purchase power to buy the iPads in bulk and bill them to families over the course of four terms?

Education pricing is not available to high school students. Purchase through school would increase school fees due to the need to employ personnel to oversee such a program. The school has investigated ways for families to purchase through local retail outlets providing an interest free period or layby.

If the school had ‘ownership’ of the devices wouldn’t the school have greater control over their usage?

The iPad is designed to be a personal device. Each student or family will have their own Apple ID which essentially controls the device. As such each user will personalise the device and incorporate it into their daily routine as they see fit. Students will undertake tutorials addressing issues of responsible digital citizenship.  Ownership of the iPad drastically increases the responsibility students take for the device.

Problem solvers

It is often stated many careers that students entering high school will pursue in their working life do not exist yet! Our students need to be independant learners and problem solvers to cope with the many challenges ahead.

Adaptability

The only constant in life is change. This is especially true in education. Those who can adapt to a changing environment, whether that be school, work or leisure, will be best equipped to lead a fulfilling life,

Creativity

Rather than passive consumers of information students will become active creators of information. We see this now with blogs, wikis, web 2 access and social networking. The digital age has empowered us to be more creative and critical thinkers.
